You don’t have to travel far to find a cosy spot for a relaxing cuppa.

We all want to find that special place to go where everybody knows your name. It makes finding a cosy café in your neighbourhood like discovering a precious treasure.

In recent years we’ve seen cafés sprouting in humble neighbourhoods where the rent is cheaper. However it doesn’t make the spaces inferior to those in prime locations. In fact, there is something very charming about a contemporary cafe in retro settings that patrons seem to enjoy.

The change has certainly injected new life into aging estates and brought new appreciation to the old-world Singapore that is slowly fading away. In fact you can view this trend as a transition into the next era of heartland life and culture.

Some of these cafes celebrate old-school flavours in their cuisine to highlight their roots. In a way, as contemporary as they are, these places are helping to preserve bits and pieces from the last 50 years of our little island state.

Start looking for these hidden gems by checking out our list of our favourite heartland cafes.
