And no – these aren’t just your usual zumba, pilates or yoga studios.

Let’s face it: the gym has become the urban dweller’s new stomping ground.

And yes, while a sweep of most gyms in Singapore will have you realise that it’s mostly men grunting away on the machines, you can’t deny that the demand for workout classes and fitness spaces for women is growing.

Just last year, Encore Fitness, the first female-only Muay Thai gym, opened its doors – proving that ‘traditionally female workout forms’ like yoga and pilates aren’t the only fitness us ladies dabble into.

It’s true that working out in a female-only environment can feel a lot more comfortable for a vast majority of women. (After all, there’s none of that self-consciousness or frustrating ‘man-splaining’ of equipment that sometimes happens in a unisex gym.) But the need for it goes so much more beyond that.

In fitness spaces like Contours Express, there are dedicated classes and equipment specially designed for women of all age groups in mind. Its Vibration Training programme, for one, caters to joint pains – a condition that many older women grapple with.

Not only that also feels genuinely great to enter a space with a community of like-minded women that makes female-only gyms that much more appealing. That – and the fact that it’s also a great option for Muslim women who don’t necessarily want to train in their hijabs is a bonus. Relate to this? Check them out above!
