Of the America of Jackie and Kennedy, of the beginnings of advertising, of the end of the world. Divorce has detonated the nuclear family. Executives are still dressed like they are going for a party, their secretaries had a distinct Marilyn air. Everyone is beautiful and everyone is neurotic. The wife of Don Draper (the hero), the Grace Kelly lookalike, sees a shrink and will no longer bear the deception of her man.
The generation before, it happened. Here, it breaks. The series resembles the old Hollywood movies in viewed in cinemascope. TV will finally match up to the cinema, not only for its screenplay, but also the beauty of its images.

“This landmark series focuses on the social changes of the 60s (feminism, racial equality, modernization of advertising, development of television, clothing and musical changes) and the violence of the challenges they cause. Mad Men tells us all the more Western societies today are facing similar changes – it is no longer the ‘white man’ who loses his dominance, but Western countries shedding their economic domination,” says Marjolaine Boutet.
