King's Landing (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
The scenes at King's Landing really started to take form from Season 2 onwards, when it was decided that filming should be moved to Dubrovnik which would serve as the setting of the capital city for the show. It was chosen for the thick stone walls and proximity to the sea, both of which suit the show's theme perfectly well.
Kingsroad (The Dark Hedges, Northern Ireland)
Kingsroad, also known as the longest road in the Seven Kingdoms, is oft talked about and is also featured in the scene where Arya escapes from the city with Gendry. It is a road built in the 18th century by the Stuart family as a grand entrance to their mansion, lined with magnificent beech trees that make for an absolutely gorgeous view.
Winterfell (Doune Castle, Scotland)
The Doune Castle is a landmark that has been featured not only in Game of Thrones, but in several other films as well, such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Its medieval setting sets the mood for Winterfell immaculately, giving it the feel of an old but strong castle that has survived years of reign.
Dothraki Wedding (Azure Window, Malta)
Azure Window is a 50-metre tall natural limestone arch that looks as amazing as it sounds. It served as the backdrop to Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen's wedding in Season 1, and offers a beautiful experience that is worth taking a detour for if you happen to be in Gozo. Perhaps you can organise your own wedding shoot here as well!
Meereen (Klis Fortress, Croatia)
This place may not have been featured for very long in the show, but it is a significant one where the slaves of Meereen line the steps to watch as Daenerys orders the Great Masters to be crucified. It is where the slaves are finally freed, and when Daenerys rises up as the ruler of this city. In addition, standing at the top of these steps provides you with a breathtaking view of Split below.
Jon & Ygritte's "Love Nest" (Grjótagjá, Iceland)
Iceland is a beautiful country to visit in general, and a destination you need to travel to at least once in your lifetime. When you're there, don't forget to stop by Grjótagjá, a small lava cave whose water heats up in the spring, up to 50 degrees Celsius! So that's how the couple got comfortable...
House of the Undying (Minceta Tower, Croatia)
Remember how Daenerys needed to save one of her dragons captured in the mysterious House of the Undying, while Jorah was stranded outside, unable to find an entrance? The scene took place at an actual location called the Minceta Tower, a UNESCO Heritage Site in Dubrovnik that served as one of the city's fortresses for many centuries. It is the most prominent point on the city's walls and is a symbol of the "unconquerable" city of Dubrovnik.
King's Landing Gate (Mdina Gate, Malta)
Before filming in Croatia, the scenes at King's Landing were mostly set in Malta, one of them being the Mdina Gate used to serve as the entrance to King's Landing. This is where Catelyn and Ser Rodrik ride into the capital to investigate the attack on Bran in Season 1, and is just a great place to reminisce the times when things were only just beginning to complicate.
North of the Wall (Vatnajökull, Iceland)
Most of the scenes featuring the Wall and beyond were taken in the snowy backdrop of Iceland's glaciers and mountains. The gorgeous scenery at Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, will make your jaw drop as you trek through the snow and imagine being a wildling yourself. Do you think you could make this place your home?
The Water Gardens (Alcázar de Sevilla, Spain)
Although not a main feature, we were always impressed by the vibrant hues that greeted us viewers by the palace of House Martell in Dorne. The lush greenery will astound you as you walk through the gardens pretending to be royalty. The upper levels of this palace continue to be used by the royal family as their official Seville residence till this day, so you're actually not too far off from living your dream.
