“ONLY LANDSCAPES AND MONUMENTS”

LAURENCE, 46, TEMPORARY SHOW BUSINESS WORKER.

“I photograph only landscapes and monuments. I cannot bear people in my photos, whether those I have close relationships with or strangers. I go as far as pushing them if they do not move! I went to Seville last year. There were three of us, but I didn’t take a single photo of us. I study history, I like old stones, so I prefer to have buildings in photos rather than persons. When I look at my pictures, I sometimes say to myself that it is a pity not to appear in them at all, so I begin to force myself a little by taking some selfies. This avoids having to ask to somebody to take the photo. I find that the result is more natural, less static, there are more feelings. I took one recently in New York, just to say “I was there! ”

THE expert’s OPINION – “A RECORD OF PLACES AND TIME”

“On holidays, we discover places as we meet people. Although a lot of people use buildings and other ancient memorials as a background for their portraits of journeys, Virginie makes them the main subject of her photos. She thus directs her glance according to her point of interest. Virginie clearly differentiates between photos of places and of old stones in terms of registration in history and time, and photos taken with her friends that favour the instantaneous moment. As for the selfies, it offers her more freedom, by freeing her from the looks of others, and enabling a more spontaneous image. Note: when we pose in front of a famous monument, we associate a little of us that with this notoriety, and become kings or queens of immortality.”
